Elementary II Classroom Pajama Drive

Good Afternoon Everyone,

The children are bringing home flyers today about the Scholastic Reading Club Pajama Drive.  This is an annual event that benefits the Pajama Program.  The Pajama Program is a nonprofit organization that supplies pajamas to children living in orphanages, shelters, foster care, and group homes.  Scholastic matches a book with each pair of pajamas that are donated through December 14th.

The guidelines for the pajamas are:

  • The pajamas must be brand new.
  • The pajamas may be in all sizes.
  • The pajamas must be in complete sets or nightgowns.
  • The pajamas must be manufactured as pajamas, so they will be flame-retardant and safe.

*You may donate fuzzy socks and/or slippers to go with the pajamas, too.  It would be wonderful for these children to have something to keep their feet warm!

The pajama drive is a service learning, language arts, and math project all rolled into one for the 2nd-4th graders.  The children will be making posters, speaking with the other classes, and graphing the number of pajamas brought in by each class.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to be active in helping others their age!

Thank you for your support.

Elementary I November Blog

The Elementary I Class has wonderful news about the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF project! Our goal was to raise $240 for a School-in-a-Box, which is a kit containing supplies and materials for a teacher and up to 40 students (books, pencils, scissors, counting cubes, a clock, posters, and lots more for basic educational needs to be used anywhere in the world). With the entire school’s help, we completely exceeded our goal and raised $358.27! That means our school raised enough for a School-in-a-Box, a bicycle to take medicine to rural villages, soccer balls, and a lot of protein biscuits! I am so very proud of the children (and parents) for making this happen! Thank you!
Our class is also starting a drive to help the folks at CASA (Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound). We will be collecting non-perishable food items (low sodium, no sugar added, if possible). Canned meats, vegetables, and fruits, and boxed rice are recommended. We will also fill a basket with paper towels, napkins, dish cloths, dish towels, dish detergent, and hand soap. This is a wonderful program, and they were very grateful for our donations last year. The drive will begin November 18 and last through November 26.

Other news in the classroom: the children are all working very hard! We just learned about the parts of an addition equation: addends and sums. We will be having similar lessons on the parts of subtraction, multiplication, and division problems soon. They are all working at their own pace (with a little encouragement here and there) using the various math materials. With language, we have learned about nouns and articles and will be diving into adjectives very soon. Grammar can be so exciting! The children are learning all about birds right now in zoology. We have made books about the external parts of birds, learned about bird types, and created our own birds. We will have some further lessons and experiments on birds, too. We will be working on a lot of Thanksgiving holiday activities also. Parents, please look for a Thanksgiving feast sign-up sheet.

As we are all aware, it is getting so cold outside! Please don’t forget to send your child to school in warm clothes (coats, gloves, hats). We are outside between 45 minutes and an hour everyday.

We are planning a field trip to see The Nutcracker on Ice on December 5th!

I hope everyone has a safe and loving Thanksgiving holiday!

Elementary II Blogpost

The 2nd – 4th grade students had a wonderful time creating spooky spider paintings this week. We would like to thank Ms. Sharon (Ian’s mom) for sharing her talent and this special project with us, and Ms. Olga (Vincent’s mom) for helping.

Also, we are currently working on our class art project for the auction that will take place on November 15th. The children have been “mod podging” leaves that will be put together to create a leaf collage. As part of our art project we have been exploring different types of leaves, their parts, and why they change color in the fall. If you have any special books or information you would like to share on this topic, please contact Mrs. Hill.

Elementary I Blogpost

I want to start off by truly thanking all of the hardworking parents (and kids) that helped with the Nature Trail maintenance. I took the children for a hike on the Monday after the accomplishing workday. We brought along our journals, and the children sat on the stumps in the Outdoor Classroom and peacefully wrote and drew about their lovely experiences. We then went for a nice hike. The children made a ton of discoveries from groundhog burrows to cool spider webs.

Also, thank you so much to Adriane C. (Eli and Jacob) for picking up the free beautyberry bushes through the Operation Green Team. They were very tiny and pitiful little plants, so I replanted them and fertilized them. My goal is for the children to plant them throughout the Nature Trail later this week. They have pretty little flowers in the spring and summer and then gorgeous purple berries in the fall. (I included some pictures of the tiny new ones and one of my older bushes.) The beautyberry bushes are native to Alabama and will also attract wildlife (birds and deer) to our Nature Trail.

Thank you to all of our energetic chaperones for our Botanical Gardens field trip! It was awesome, and the kids had an amazing time! We will be going to Gullion Farms later this month, which will be another great field trip.

The Fall Festival is coming up. Our class will make a delicious vegetarian chili. I will have a little booth to plant violas, and lots of other teachers will have wonderful activities planned, so come and bring family and friends!

Have a wonderful fall! This weather is absolutely gorgeous!
