Happy 2014! This week we had a special Sankranti celebration. We had some special guests come in and show the children a special tradition of sprinkling flower petals, rice and coins onto their heads. Each child got to experience this and was able to take home a few coins. We also cooked a special rice pancake called dosa. Many thanks to to Aruna, Durga, and Eden for coming into the classroom and creating this special learning experience. We really had a lovely time celebrating this Harvest celebration from India.
We have been exploring the organs of our human bodies since returning to school this month. Since the human body is so amazing, we will continue our human body curriculum into February, learning about our skeletal system and our five senses. We will also have some special guests coming into the classroom to share information on the human body.
Also, February is observation month so please sign up for a time to come a observe a class at MSH!
We are always amazed at the consideration and kindness that we get to see in each of our beautiful people. From simple acts of kindness like helping someone hang their lunch bag or helping clean up an accidental spill to giving up their birthday gifts in exchange for sharing a new work in the classroom. It’s hard to believe that this is the last week of January – this month has flown by! The children have re-adjusted to the routine well and have enjoyed reuniting with each other. We are so excited about the new additions to our classroom – a new fourth grade student and Ms. Dola. It is wonderful to have an extra pair of hands to help everyone learn.
We are currently preparing for our exploration of Europe (for the Multicultural Festival) by studying maps and the globe. So far, our studies have included a review of the continents and major oceans, and the lines of latitude and longitude. We’ve also used our outdoor classroom to learn about coniferous and deciduous trees. Everyone is working at their own pace in language arts and math, but some of the topics being covered are: types of graphs, word problem clue words, estimation, possessive nouns, and pronouns.
We have a few parent work hours available right now. There are 3 of our classroom chairs that are in need of simple repairs. (The chairs could most likely be repaired with wood glue.) Please let me know if you are willing to help out.
- Keep reading with your child for at least 20 minutes each night and help him/her record it in the reading log in his/her yellow folder. This is very important to help build a sense of responsibility, plus it’s the only regular “homework” that they have.
- It is also important for the children to build responsibility by bringing their yellow folders to school each day. I check their reading logs regularly, and use their yellow folders as a key source of communication.
- Scholastic Book Orders are due Friday, January 31st. The children are already looking forward to getting their books! Plus, every book you order gives our class bonus points that help build our classroom library.

This week in the Toddler 1 Class we cooked rosemary bread using rosemary we picked from the garden ourselves. We talked about how the yeast was alive and needed warm water and sugar to grow. They watched the yeast expand as it ‘ate’ the sugar. We also talked about how if the bread did not have yeast in it then it would be flat, but it would get big with the yeast in it. Once our yeast was done ‘growing’ the children helped to scoop the remaining ingredients in the bread pan. Then we had to wait. We watched the bread machine knead the bread, saw it rise, smelled it baking and finally we got to taste it. Everyone loved the rosemary bread!
Here is the recipe:
- 1 cup of warm water
- 2 1/2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar
- *Put these ingredients in a measuring cup and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, add the other ingredients in the bread machine pan.
- 2 1/2 cups of bread flour
- 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of dried rosemary
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
*Now add your yeast mixture to the bread pan and set the bread machine to quick bread or 1lb loaf. All bread machine settings differ. This is a smaller loaf of bread and most bread machines bake it for 2 hours or 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Enjoy with butter. Our toddlers sure did!
Hello 2014! We hope you all had a very memorable holiday. The children came back to the classroom ready to work…they have been busy! Our studies this month have been focusing on the continent of Antarctica and Martin Luther King, Jr. We have been discussing the different types of penguins found in Antarctica and their unique characteristics. With the weather being so cold we have been keeping the children inside, but please send them to school with warm jackets, hats, mittens, etc., in the chance that we feel it is safe for them to play outside for a while. As always, thank you for sharing your children with us.
We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday! We will be learning about the human body throughout the months of January and February. We have just finished our study of the 5 senses. We also learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the children enjoyed making peace flowers with their hand cuttings. In February we will go on a field trip to Si-Quest Science Museum. The children are still working at their own pace in the practical life, math, reading, and geography areas.
